My German friend chose some dishes for us to try. I have not have much German food before so much of my review is based on her reactions.
SCHNITZEL. It was very thin and covered with seasoned, fine bread crumbs. The thinness made the meat more tender. It reminded me of pork katsu. I would recommend this.
My friend thought the RED CABBAGE was a bit sour. I have no idea what it’s supposed to taste like but I enjoyed it. It tasted lightly pickled.
My friend said SPATZLE is normally a food kids love and sure enough my daughter liked the spatzle which had some gravy on it from the BREAD DUMPLING. I didn’t like the spatzle. It was a chewy, tasteless dough that looked like pale play doh pressed through holes but my daughter ate two big helpings of it. Nobody liked the bread dumpling. Again, I have no idea what it’s normally supposed to be like but it appeared to be a huge ball of densely squeezed dough covered in gravy. I would have preferred smaller balls but maybe it’s supposed to be one large ball.
The CURRYWURST was disappointing. I could barely taste any curry powder even though I knew it was currywurst. If I did not know it was currywurst, I would not have even guessed there was any curry flavor in this dish. This dish was mostly chopped potatoes. It was about 80% potato and 20% sausage. The food itself tasted fine but it was mostly a mild tomato sauce I could taste. I do not recommend this one.
The WURSTSALAT was quite sour to me. I though it would be refreshing but I was only able to eat only two bites before the sourness got to me.
SCWEINEHAXE is also another dish I would recommend. It reminds me of Chinese roast pork but without any of those seasonings. The skin is super crunchy (remind me of chicharrons).
How authentic is this place? I don’t know, but when we were at the restaurant picking up food, I asked my friend if she though the restaurant reminded her of Germany and she said “no”. My friend had also tried speaking German when she called into the restaurant. She ended up trying to pronounce the dishes with an American accent because the person who picked up the phone could not understand the German pronunciations.
It looks like a cute cozy restaurant though. I would go back and eat there in the future. There’s a lot in the back of the building for parking.
